Open Dialog: One Year After the Turnover of Roe v. Wade

German-American Topics in English with Jason Brown, Freiburg

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overruled the right to abortion as established by the 1973 case Roe v. Wade. The proverbial “Women's Right to Choose” as a constitutional guarantee is thus history - and abortion is now already illegal or severely restricted in twenty states. "We will not go back!" was shouted in anger and outrage at this summer's protest marches - but that's exactly what it looks like: An era of legalized oppression and social regression may have begun with this shocking ruling. Around the same time, the German Bundestag decided to abolish the long-controversial Section 219a. It previously regulated the ban on advertising abortions. At the same time, however, it also meant that doctors could not offer detailed information about abortions to the public without fear of prosecution. So, where do we stand on the issue of abortion one year after these rulings? Let’s discuss the political and social developments of reproductive rights in the U.S. and in Germany.
