Open Dialog: Supporting the Troops!? Germany’s Zeitenwende and America’s National Security
Regarding the war in Ukraine, last year in February chancellor Scholz proclaimed the so called "Zeitenwende", sparking new political discussions about the state of the Bundeswehr and Germany's national defense. While in Germany the public perception of the military is often more negative, in the U.S. the reputation of the armed forces is a very different one both socially as well as politically, which shows, for example, in their huge military budget and in the many governmental contracts for their weapons industry. So, let's discuss the different meanings and importance of the military in the two countries.
