Open Dialog: Green City Life

German-American topics with Jason Brown, Freiburg

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – a motto many live or would like to live by. However, a green lifestyle can present challenges depending on where you live. In a city, where space is limited, buying locally produced food can be hard. Initiatives like urban gardening could remedy the situation. In Detroit, where many grocery stores closed down, urban farms have become a major source of healthy food, for example. In Germany, solidary farming has become a popular way of getting locally produced vegetables and fruits. A sustainable lifestyle in the city also poses challenges regarding waste management. Cities like Freiburg or Carmel in Indiana have adopted eco-friendly policies such as composting or recycling in order to establish a more circular economy and reduce resource consumption. Last but not least, land is a highly contested resource in cities and soil sealing has a huge environmental impact. Thus, creating sustainable cities has become essential for urban planners, politics and activists.

So let’s discuss eco-friendly habits and the many facets of a sustainable city.
