The ‘Scribbling Women’ of the Late 19th Century

Vortrag mit Prof. Dr. Sämi Ludwig, Université de Haute-Alsace | Im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung "Stephen Crane's Times"

In this class Prof. Dr. Ludwig will discuss some of the important names of Realist authors who happened to be women, among them Harriett Beecher Stowe, Rebecca Harding Davis, Fanny Fern, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Rose Terry Cooke, Sarah Orne Jewett, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Kate Chopin, Sui Sin Far, Zitkala Sa (Gertrude Bonnin)... Like other minorities, women (who were already the majority of readers) also found their way into print in the 19th century—so much so that Hawthorne complained about the competition! In this lecture Ludwig is going to give a survey of who they are and present each one of them with at least one or two memorable texts.

Suggested readings: Any of the Short Stories; such as Wilkins Freeman’s ”Church Mouse,” or Chopin’s ”Story of an Hour.” For the more ambitious students, maybe also Gilman’s ”Yellow Wallpaper”
