Open Dialog: One Year After the Storming of the Capitol

German-American Topics in English with Jason Brown

This month marks the one-year anniversary of the riot that breached the United States Capitol, during a session of Congress certifying the electoral vote count of the 2020 US Presidential election. Until then, the Capitol had not been breached since British troops marched in and burned the building during the War of 1812. Europe as a whole has experienced a rightward shift, such as in France, where all four leading presidential candidates are right-of-center, or in Germany, where the AfD, while declining in seat count following the last election, remains the second largest party in the opposition. What led up to the event, and what came of it? What are the parallels in German history, both in the event that took place and the extremist undercurrent that caused it?
