Crane’s Europe and Orient
Stephen Crane became famous for a war novel about a war he had not seen himself, at a time when the idea that writers should focus on their own first-hand experiences was strongly advocated. It was not before a newspaper sent him to Greece to cover the April-May 1897 Greco-Turkish conflict that Crane actually gained first-hand experience not just of battles, but of Europe. Also, the conflict was taking place at one of the faultlines between Europe and the Orient – which Crane, arguably, saw somewhat unlike his contemporaries, blurring the lines between experience and literary realism.
