Open Dialog: Gentrification & Urban Planning

German-American Topics in English with Jason Brown

After the airport at Berlin Tempelhof closed in 2008, the neighboring district of Neukölln experienced what many affordable living areas in international metropoles have witnessed over the past two decades: old renting contracts were terminated; students, artists, and young professionals moved to the area; and rents increased by more than 50% in the following five years. Whether in Berlin, San Francisco, London, or Lisbon – most major cities have experienced gentrification to a degree that has drastically altered the nature of whole quarters and boroughs. Most often, the people directly affected by it are lower class and/or with migratory backgrounds. To combat or reverse the effects of gentrification, cities have approached the issue with various strategies ranging from local regulations and legislation to citizen activism.

So let’s talk about gentrification and more sustainable approaches to urban development!
