(Re-)Reading War Literature Ecocritically

Vortrag mit Dr. Anouk Aerni, Englisches Seminar der Universität Basel | Im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung "Stephen Crane's Times"

In light of today’s ecological situation, a renegotiation of the nature-human relationship is crucial. As a literary-critical approach, ecocriticism works against the anthropocentric assumptions of human exceptionalism and anthropological difference by challenging the nature-human dualism at the root of the predominant Western worldview, which places humans not only opposite but outside and above nature. Though written long before the dawn of our current ecological crisis, Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage offers numerous touchpoints for an ecocritical (re-)reading. By applying reading strategies developed specifically for the ecocritical reading of war literature, this lecture will demonstrate different ways in which a classic literary text can be approached from a fresh angle and how that may yield important insights for contemporary concerns.
