Open Dialog: Homeschooling

German-American Topics in English with Jason Brown, Freiburg

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2019, German children and students have been homeschooled. This has caused much anxiety and concern not only among parents, but also among educators, sociologists, and politicians. They believe that children are not only losing out on an important learning environment, but also on social competences that come from face-to-face interactions.
In the U.S., however, homeschooling is legal and every year around 3% of U.S. students choose to be home-schooled; an increasing trend in several states.

So what are the pros and cons of homeschooling? And if not either-or, then could children at one point benefit from a kind of mixed model of school attendance? Let's discuss.

The discussions will take place online. You will receive a link to the virtual meeting room upon registration.
