The Personal History of David Copperfield

Monday Nite at the Movies

This modern take on Charles Dickens’s Victorian classic tale tells the story of a young orphan and follows his life from birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood.
After an idyllic and untroubled childhood David’s widowed mother Clara marries the violent factory owner Mr. Murdstone. The evil stepfather soon forces David to work in his factory where the miserable child is taken in by the good-hearted but poor Mr. Micawber. When David learns of his mother’s death he escapes from his life full of privation and finds a loving and supportive substitute family in his wealthy but eccentric great-aunt Betsey Trotwood and her lodger, the odd Mr. Dick.
In this “terrifically likable, genial adaptation of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield” (The Guardian) the audience follows David’s life as he strives for family, friendship, romance and status, overcomes numerous obstacles, meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England and finally pursues his dream to become a gentleman and writer. Starring Dev Patel as David Copperfield and acting luminaries Hugh Laurie and Tilda Swinton, this adaptation promises to be a real treat.
