Entfällt: Harriet

Monday Nite at the Movies

This year, the abolitionist Harriet Tubman was supposed to replace former US president Andrew Jackson, who not only opposed the abolitionist movement but was a slave owner himself, on the twenty-dollar bill – but the release was delayed by Trump’s Treasury Secretary. The 2019 American biographical film Harriet puts the spotlight on the faith and courage which led Harriet Tubman on her journey. Araminta “Minty” Ross, later Harriet Tubman, is newly married to the freedman John Tubman in 1840s Maryland, while she herself is still illegally enslaved by the Brodess family. Although presumed dead, Minty, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, manages to flee to Philadelphia via the Underground Railroad but plans to come back to reunite with her husband and free her family. Critics state that director Kasi Lemmons makes the film an “edge-of-your-seat adventure” with Erivo “giving her portrayal the scale and depth appropriate to such a legendary American leader.” The film received two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song and Best Actress.
