High Life

Monday Nite at the Movies

Set in an alternative reality, High Life depicts an expedition of “recycled” inmates sent into space to discover alternative energies created by a black hole. On top of living with the complexities of a futuristic spaceship, the crew is also constantly exposed to the cruel oversight of Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche), who carries out medical tests with forceful methods. The boundary pushing film introduces the viewer to topics such as fatherhood, human psychological capacities and morally dubious scientific advancements through sexual experimentation. The relationship between Monte (Robert Pattinson) and his daughter (Jessi Ross) provides a particular look into psychological struggles and will leave a mark on viewers. Critically acclaimed director Claire Davis combines this array of themes with captivating cinematography and a rather graphic depiction of aggression and sexuality. The unusual combination of oppressive sexuality and intimate sensitivity skew her concept of the true beauty of life.
