At Eternity's Gate

Monday Nite at the Movies

This star-studded biographical drama directed by Academy Award Nominee Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) paints a loving picture of the life and tribulations of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Vincent (Willem Dafoe) has a vision to create the images that he sees in his mind and to make his unique and colorful perception of the world visible. But aside from his brother Theo (Rupert Friend) who, throughout Vincent’s life, supports him financially and unconditionally, Vincent experiences nothing
but derision for his art. Even a brief but intense collaboration with French painter Paul Gauguin (Oscar Isaac) fails miserably. The movie, composed of stunning shots that are like Van Gogh’s paintings springing to life, dives deep into the pain and loneliness brought on by his inability to connect with the
people around him and the determination some call “madness” that compelled van Gogh to push through nonetheless and keep on painting.
