The Favourite

Monday Nite at the Movies

UK/USA | 2018 | 120 min | Dir.: Yorgos Lanthimos | OmU

The Favourite is a 2018 historical period drama film that is set at the court of Britain’s Queen Anne (1702-1714) in the 18th century. Focusing on the behind the scenes intrigues and power struggles going on at British Court, it revolves around the rivalry between two cousins competing to be Queen Anne’s (Olivia Colman) favorite. Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) feels threatened by the arrival of Abigail
Masham (Emma Stone) whose main motive is to rise up the palace food chain, resulting in a bitter competition acted out in grim, manic comedy and dark humor. Queen Anne being in her waning years whilst having to wage war against her numerous enemies, is forced to trust and rely on her friend, confidante and lover Lady Sarah, who has been pulling the strings for a long time now, only to be deceived. The Favourite is another movie that plays into Lanthimos’s general thesis that love is rarely untainted and mostly comes with dark ulterior motives, a lesson that Queen Anne has yet to learn.
