With the advent of rich mercantile families, art moved away from the almost solely religious purpose it had had for centuries and began to describe the world around us and the people in our world. Literature, music, painting, theater - these things mean something to us because they explain the world in ways we only dream about. What value does art have in a modern, everything-is-free world?
