Amerika am Scheideweg
Die prekäre Lage von Minderheiten und Migranten in den USA bestimmt derzeit die Schlagzeilen. In Deutschland wenig bekannte Initiativen wie Welcoming America und Sanctuary Cities stehen für ein Amerika der Weltoffenheit und Toleranz. Die Diskussion dieser Konzepte amerikanischer Kommunen, die derzeit stark unter Rechtfertigungsdruck stehen, bildet den Mittelpunkt dieser Veranstaltung.
Prof. Albert Scherr (PH Freiburg) führt in das Spannungsfeld ein. Experten aus Deutschland und den USA – u.a Daniel Sturm von United States Conference of Catholic Bishops/ Migration and Refugee Service, Washington und Dan Wallace von Welcoming America – diskutieren Chancen und Perspektiven amerikanischer und deutscher Kommunen die Rechte von Geflüchteten und Migranten zu verteidigen und Städte als Orte gelebter Vielfalt zu erhalten.
At 7 p.m., prior to the panel discussion, Wahlkreis 100% will present on the voting rights of people with immigration backgrounds and a planned mock election in September 2017. More than 18,000 Freiburgers have lived in Germany for an average of 19 years, yet lack the right to vote and have a voice in politics. The initiative sees this as a failing of a democracy and a denial to immigrants as equal
participants in society. Their aim is an equal voting right on local level, where Freiburgers with EU-passport already have a voting right since 1998.
Since 2002, Wahlkreis 100% has organized mock elections in parallel with German elections; these elections are an important means of raising awareness around this issue. In 2013, more than 1,000 Freiburgers participated in the mock election and 2017 other cities in Germany will join in. Members of the iniative will discuss their plans for the September elections and interest in engaging with Freiburger Wahlkreis 100%.
