Racism in America: Historical Echoes and Current Conflicts
Many political observers on both sides of the Atlantic have interpreted President Barack Obama’s election in 2008 as the beginning of a new, a post-racial era in the U.S. However, recent events of police violence against African Americans as well as the emergence of the “Black lives matter“ movement are grim reminders of an ongoing conflict about race in America. In this class, we will explore both the historical roots of racism in America and current social and cultural developments in the debate about racial discrimination.
