English for Travellers

This one-day course is for anyone planning a holiday/vacation in an English-speaking country or a country where you might need English like Thailand or India. There will be practice for nasic situations like booking a hotel, ordering a meal, renting a car, shopping and dealing with problems as well as making a little small talk with the local inhabitants. The level will be A2/B1.

Dieses Kursangebot baut sich stufenweise nach vorhandenen Kenntnissen auf. (Entspricht etwa A1-B1/B2 des gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens - Council of Europe).
Die Kursbücher und Unterrichtsmaterialien, die verwendet werden sind beim Kurs angegeben. Grundsätzlich ist der erste Kurs für Anfänger ohne bzw. mit sehr geringen Vorkenntnissen. Danach bauen sich die Stufen entsprechend dem Lernprogramm auf. Das Angebot gibt bereits in den ersten beiden Bänden den Teilnehmern, die aktiv mitarbeiten, die Chance, einen umfassenden Wortschatz aufzubauen. Conversation Courses - 1. Hj

The main focus of all these courses is on training speaking skills and expanding vocabulary. All courses require either adequate, good or excellent speaking skills, depending on the level of the course, to participate actively. In all courses, the level is to a large extent determined by the participants. 15 sessions of 90 or 120 minutes duration.

Kursinhalt: Wortschatzerweiterung, vielseitige Übungen mit Themen und Texten unter Berücksichtigung grammatikalischer Aspekte. Fragen aus dem Englischunterricht in der Schule werden berücksichtigt. Intensive und zielgerichtete Vorbereitung auf das schriftliche Abitur. Alte Abiturprüfungen sowie ähnliche Klausuren werden erarbeitet, wobei sowohl Landeskunde als auch das Sternchenthema (die Kurzgeschichten und deren sozialer und geschichtlicher Hintergrund) behandeltwerden. Hausaufgaben werden erteilt und nicht nur korrigiert zurückgegeben sondern ausführlich kommentiert.

This seminar is designed to provide business English skills for people who have already reached a European Framework level of B1. Depending on the needs and interests of the participants, topics may include: telephoning, writing emails and other business correspondence, negotiating, presentations, entertaining and small talk, writing memos, reports and summaries, product inquiries, offers, orders, invoicing, advertising, dealing with complaints, etc. A brief introduction to the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) with sample questions will be given. This examination can be taken optionally at a later date at the Carl-Schurz-Haus.

Presentation Seminar B2+

Do presentations make you nervous? How about delivering one in English? Don’t worry, attending one of our weekend seminars will make the whole experience seem more like a walk in the park...

Let our instructor highlight the structure and content of English presentations for you, teach you about standard expressions for navigating your information and add a few tips on any accompanying visuals such as white board or flip charts, posters, presentations using video or overhead projectors, etc.

Students should bring their B1 level or better English speaking skills to this seminar and expect to leave with a better understanding of how to make presentations more effective, to avoid language and other potential weaknesses and focus on strengths.

For better or worse, the impact of globalization on Europe and the rest of the world is resulting in more and more companies declaring English to be the official company language. The expectation of many companies is that job hunters applying for positions must do so in English. To this end, we have designed a weekend workshop to assist you in polishing your presentation of yourself.

First we will take a look at your Curriculum Vitae, cover letters, follow-up letters, etc. and check them for spelling, formatting and style issues. Then we will discuss oral interviews from a language as well as a psychological perspective.

Students should bring their current application materials (CV, cover letter, etc.). We will optimize them so that students have a perfect CV and resume in English that they can use as a template right away or in the future. Students will be asked general interview questions and responses will be evaluated and improved as far as possible.
