(Information: Udo Linsmeier, Tel. 07664-505078) Square Dancing Courses in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Südlicher Breisgau, Merzhausen and Carl-Schurz-Haus/Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut e.V. Freiburg American Square Dancing, Basic/Intermediate Course When settlers made their homes in the "New World" they also brought their own dances from their home countries with them. After the day's work they often came together and danced their traditional dances to lively banjo music. From these varied dance elements developed an independent dance form which led from American contradancing to square dancing. The basic course is an introduction to the basic figures of square dancing. This is offered every September. This is type of dancing is not so much one that needs a lot of explaining, one simply has to experience it. Square dancing is great fun, so say insiders. There are no age limits or language barriers for square dancers. The "calls" are in English, but even Americans have to learn the names of the dance figures. In this was square dancers who have learned all 68 figures can immediately join in dancing in other clubs anywhere in the world. This basic course covers 48 dance figures (Please register as couples). The remaining 24 figures are taught in an intermediate course starting every February. Members of the club are all members of the Carl-Schurz-Haus Society with an annual membership fee of € 70. They are entitled to the same privileges and concessions as all other members. Those participating in club evenings should have achieved at least a mainstream level of 68 fugures. Guests from other clubs are always welcome to visit.
