Patchwork/Quiltprogramm

Artistic, hand-made quilts are not only collectors' items in America, but increasing in Europe. Originally, the quilt was a 3-layered bedcover, hand-quilted using backstitching with traditional patterns.Quilting is generally considered an American textile artform, although it was already known in ancient Egypt. Quilted blankets were worn under the armour of crusaders to Europe. Later quilting gained popularity in dress and coat fashions at European courts in the 17th and 18th centuries. A lack of material and the necessity of old pieces of material, filling material and old blankets to survive the long, cold winter led to the development of quilting and patchwork in America during the settlement in the 17th century. The "pieced quilt" came into being, whose visible side comprises individual geometric pieces of material sewn together. The modern"art quilt", which no longer serves the sole function of keeping warm, now is a work of art in ins own right decorating the bed or hung on the wall.
