About the Library

A piece of America in Germany, a piece of German-American history.

The Carl-Schurz-Haus Library provides all interested parties - from students to professors, from Germans interested in America to Americans living in Germany - insights and detailed information about American society, culture and politics. These insights are also connected with a transatlantic perspective in which other European cultures (e.g. Germany and the UK) are considered.

We have around 12,000 books from various fields, most of which are in English. Classic novels, poetry and popular literature from America and England are enjoyed by leisure readers, but also by teachers and students who are conducting research. The same applies to our non-fiction, which contains in-depth material from nearly every area of American society and history. Current information as well as political and cultural commentary can be found in our magazines, which also cover a very broad spectrum. From Time to The New Yorker to Atlantic Monthly, our magazines offer a diverse overview of today's America. For even more information, you may access the database collection ELibrary USA, which includes full texts from various magazines and other sources, among which are special resources for non-native speakers, children, students and teachers.

Yet another way to engage with the topic of America in a relaxed fashion is with our growing collection of audiobooks or our extensive and varied collection of over 5000 DVDs in English, within which you will find both documentaries on American history and culture, as well as popular movie titles. In addition, you can discover or rediscover the best American and British series, all without commercial breaks.

Young readers and small children can grow up with our children's and youth book collection and become faithful (adult) readers. This new focus of our collection allows children to learn English in a playful fashion. Young people can expand and solidify skills learned at school without pressure and with a lot of fun instead.

Finally, you can find information on exchange opportunities in the United States (and the English-speaking world) and preparation materials for the standardized tests used by American Universities (TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT, ...).
